thegist is a Smithsonian blog that provides a quick, casual scoop on the latest stories across the entire spectrum of science.

Enter this online scientific café of sorts, a place where you can read about—and comment on—new research from biologists, geologists, paleontologists, cosmologists … well, you get thegist.

The Bloggers

virginiahughes, who holds a master’s in science writing from Johns Hopkins University, is an editorial assistant at ScienceBlogs and has written for several science publications, including Discover and Nature.

hughpowell, who holds a master’s in avian ecology, has written for New Scientist, served as a writer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and blogged at surf.bird.scribble. In late 2007 he will be posting from Antarctica about International Polar Year research.
